“Teva Canada is pleased, on National Caregiver Day, to partner with People Before Patients, a movement that invites everyone to get involved in health care reform,” said the General Manager of Teva Canada, Christine Poulin. “We bring health and wellness visionaries to the table to discuss what a health system would look like if health and care coexisted in a better balance. This is especially important for today’s caregiver who juggles many roles in managing the well-being of loved ones, often with complex needs in a complex healthcare system.

According to General Social Survey – Giving and Receiving Care1 (compiled before the pandemic, published in 2022), one in four Canadians aged 15 and older provide care to family members or friends with a long-term health condition, physical or mental disability or problems related to aging. (Over 20,000 respondents surveyed represent 31 million Canadians.)

Women make up nearly two-thirds of caregivers providing 20 or more hours of care per week, and those providing this level of care are more likely to report that their caregiving responsibilities are stressful or very stressful 2. Additionally, 86% of respondents who provide more than 20 hours of care per week felt they could not spend as much time with family and more than three-quarters (78%) said they spent less time participating in social activities and with friends 3.

“The pandemic has caused many Canadians to experience the limitations of our healthcare system. Countless caregivers have had to fill in the gaps when caring for a vulnerable family member or friend. Through a number of new initiatives, we are creating a platform for the exchange of ideas, large and small, that enables caregivers to collaborate with healthcare professionals and stakeholders for a better system,” said Mark Stolow, CEO of People Before Patients.

With plenty of experience helping someone with mental illness and being open about his own struggles with depression, he has a first-hand perspective on the unique challenges of caring for someone with mental illness. mental illness versus physical illness.

To capture the collective experiences and visions of what the future of healthcare should look like, Teva Canada developed the national online Prescription for Care survey. Starting today and running through May 31, 2022, the survey will collect insights from Canadian adults who care about their health and the health of their communities. The conclusions of this online national survey will be compiled and a change framework document will be shared with key stakeholders in the health sector and government. It will be publicly available on the Teva Canada website and through social media.

“We expect healthcare users, including patients, paid and unpaid caregivers, and members of the healthcare system, to learn from their experiences and contribute their unique insights,” says Jason Soler, Senior Director , Marketing and Market Access for Teva Canada. “The caregiver role has evolved over the decades, but have the supports needed to maintain the best care for patients and caregivers kept pace? We look forward to reviewing the insights and findings from the survey to provide insight into what works for caregivers and where additional help is needed.
