Remember those “Got Milk?” advertisements and print ads that were popping up everywhere in the 1990s? You would be at home watching TV and suddenly your favorite celebrity would appear on the screen urging you to drink more of the creamy drink. Back then, it seemed like every day started with a big bowl of whole milk and cereal and ended with a glass of chocolate milk… but times have changed.

Dairy products have lost popularity in recent years. Whether it’s due to health issues, lactose intolerance, climate change issues, the way the dairy industry treats animals, or all the other plant-based options now on the shelves grocery stores, the list of reasons people give up on milk is growing. And milk brands have done themselves a disservice by trying to keep certain realities of their industry a secret.

Although the number of dairy farms has decreased, the amount of milk produced has increased. In effect, small family farms are being replaced by huge agricultural corporations, which work with a few thousand cows instead of a small herd. Don’t expect to bargain when it comes to milk – the price has risen sharply over the past few years. In fact, wholesale milk prices are up almost 38% since last year, with the retail price of whole milk climbing 15%.

The rise in the price of milk also had an impact on the prices of butter and cheese.

You may have heard of how dairy farms had to get rid of excess milk that couldn’t be sold during the pandemic due to the closure of many businesses (like schools and hotels) that , otherwise, would buy it in bulk. But what you might not know is that this is standard industry practice.

The Wall Street Journal reported that in 2016, US dairy farmers dumped 43 million gallons of excess milk in the first eight months of the year alone. Although some farmers donate their surplus produce to organizations such as Meals on Wheels, there is often simply too much supply.

Creamy smoothies from Starbucks, double cheese pizzas from Pizza Hut, cheese quesadillas from Taco Bell—these milk-heavy menu items are no coincidence. In fact, a government-funded product levy program known as the Dairy Promotion Program helps promote dairy products.

Its marketing arm, Dairy Management Inc., works closely with restaurants to create more dairy-focused items for their menus. For example, the program worked with McDonald’s to introduce 27 new dairy products in 2016. It also helped Domino’s develop its stuffed crust pizza and worked with Taco Bell to create its double steak and cheese quesadilla. Dairy Management Inc. is even behind the “Got Milk?” advertisements and print announcements.

Studies have shown that dairy farms contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, which have negative effects on our planet, including accelerating climate change and causing smog and air pollution. Other effects of greenhouse gas emissions include extreme weather and an increase in wildfires.

The dairy industry is working to reduce its carbon footprint, but it still has a long way to go.

The dairy industry has been under fire for years due to the mistreatment of animals. While a very small percentage of dairy cows are treated well, the majority are not.

According to a report by The Humane Society, dairy cows are often kept in cramped stalls, repeatedly impregnated, and then sold or killed once their milk production declines due to the high energy requirements needed to continuously produce milk. Milk often contains hormones and sugar, as well as a plot of saturated fat. According to the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine, dairy products are the number one source of saturated fat in the American diet, which has been linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Reports have also shown a link between the consumption of dairy products and breast cancer and prostate cancer.

It should be noted that although some research supports the link between milk and certain diseases, experts say there are still benefits to drinking it. Before making the decision to cut out or add this drink to your diet, it is important to consult with your doctor to determine what is right for you.
