Controversial Kerry priest Father Sean Sheehy took to Liveline on Wednesday, taking on Joe Duffy following a sermon in which he condemned same-sex couples, abortion and transgenderism.
The couple went to war on RTE Radio 1, with the broadcaster condemning the cleric’s use of Catholic teachings to denounce the LGBTQAI+ community.
Liveline listeners were divided by Joe’s approach, with many praising the host for ending Father Sheehy’s tirade, while others felt it was a biased approach.
The Kerry priest sparked nationwide outrage this week and refused to back down as the afternoon radio show descended into a chaotic argument with Father Sheehy and Joe roaring one on one ‘other.
“So we’re all stupid and you’re smart?” Joe raged, as the Catholic priest tagged the broadcaster and his fellow guests were brainwashed for their opinions.
Following a flamboyant row over the marriage equality vote, Father Sheehy then told a mother in Kerry that God did not intend his son to be gay.
“The fact is, God is giving your son the grace and strength to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ,” he raged. “God loves the sinner, but he hates sin. So if your son is gay, the church has no problem with people of gay orientation, but says gay sex is a mortal sin.
In a statement that left Joe flabbergasted, the Kerry priest equated being gay with a disability, with the broadcaster responding angrily; “Are you saying that homosexuality is akin to a handicap?”
The brawl of the century ended when Father Sheehy called the presenter “pathetic” and “pitiful”, before hanging up.
Listeners to Wednesday’s show took to Twitter in droves to discuss the barnstorming interaction, with many divided over Joe’s approach to the subject.
‘Unprofessional Joe Duffy. Whether you agree or not, stop interrupting with your condescending tone of voice. #Liveline,’ one listener reluctantly wrote.
“When all is said and done, it’s just creepy and weird that Father Seán Sheehy and other religious people are so obsessed with what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes #liveline,” said one other user.
“Father Sean Sheehy has now gone from yelling ‘listen to me’ at @BryanNewsatOne to yelling ‘listen to me’ at Joe on @rteliveline. “You are usually media. You have your own agenda.” The man is incapable of conversation. He screams and talks right above people. #Liveline,” agreed a third.
“The priest does to Duffy what Duffy does to his interlocutors every day. Taste her own #liveline medicine,’ another tweeted.
