Coimbatore District (Rural) Police arrested five people charged with possession of 280 tablets of a painkiller and 100g of ganja.
M. Saravanakumar (24), M. Sakthivel (21) from Bettathapuram, P. Ranjithkumar (24) from Mahaliamman Kovil Street near Periyanaickenpalayam, A. Pandidurai (22) from Vinayagar Kovil Street near Karamadai and Adhav Prakash (21) from Thaneerpanthal near Karamadai was arrested by police on Saturday during a special run.
The police team led by Sub-Inspector Jayaprakash of Periyanaickenpalayam arrested the accused with the Bettathapuram contraband.
The defendant was carrying 280 tablets of tapentadol, which is an analgesic used to treat moderate and severe pain, 100g of ganja, two packets of disposable syringes and three bottles of sodium chloride solution.
Police said the defendants sold ganja and the painkiller to their customers, including students. The accused did not have a prescription from a licensed physician who was required to have the painkiller on him. When questioned, the accused told police that he was selling the tablets as well as painkiller injections for a set amount.
They were arrested for violations of the provisions of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act. Police seized a two-wheeler used by the accused and ₹4,170 from them. They were brought before a court and were remanded in custody.
