Grocery chains continue their initiatives for Ukrainian aid

Several grocery store chains are continuing their initiatives to help Ukraine as the conflict continues.

First covered by Store brands‘sister publication progressive grocerThe Fresh Market, Publix and SpartanNash all announced new initiatives to help Ukrainian citizens following Russia’s invasion of the country that began in February.

Several grocers have already mobilized. Last month, Southeastern Grocers announced it would donate 100% of the recipes from its own brand Ukrainian vodka for the next 31 days. The financial effects of the crisis have recently been felt by delivery reached Buykas the Russian-backed service shut down following financial problems.

The fresh market announced a new fundraising campaign that will continue until April 12. The campaign includes donations to the registry and the sale of special bouquets made from sunflowers, Ukraine’s national flower. All proceeds from shoppers’ donations and flower sales will be donated to World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit organization that provides meals to Ukrainians seeking refuge and sustenance.

“We are deeply moved by the efforts of World Central Kitchen and the volunteer chefs who are providing a hot meal and food stability to Ukrainians fleeing their homes and homeland,” said Jason Potter, CEO of The Fresh Market. “We understand the importance of fresh food and the comfort of a hot meal and invite guests of The Fresh Market to join us in these fundraising efforts to help provide food for those in need. .”

Publix has also launched its fundraising campaign through which shoppers can add donations to their total at checkout. 100% of funds will go to Red Cross work to distribute food, medicine and medical supplies to war-affected Ukrainians.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine,” said Dwaine Stevens, director of community relations for Publix. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to offer our customers and associates a way to help meet the growing humanitarian needs in Ukraine and neighboring countries hosting refugees.

Finally, following its $1 million pledge to support the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Ukraine, SpartanNash has sent its first shipment of supplies to Poland. The food solutions company has tapped its military division to handle the export of essential products such as infant formula, diapers, over-the-counter medications, sports energy drinks and personal hygiene items, which will be sent to those who need it.

“Collecting product donations in the United States is one thing, but having the international logistical connections to get them overseas quickly is another,” said Tony Sarsam, president and CEO of SpartanNash. “International freight transportation is an extremely delicate and complex specialty because so much detail goes into those trips, and coordinating those shipments is one of the strengths of SpartanNash’s global supply chain.”
