Local law enforcement agencies hold prescription drug drop-off events on October 23

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Wegmans Food Markets is partnering with local law enforcement agencies in several states to host community prescription drug delivery events.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop-off event will give community members the ability to pick up expired, unused and potentially dangerous unwanted prescription drugs from their homes.

The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. 54 Wegman sites in seven states are expected to participate in the event. This includes locations in Virginia (eg Virginia Beach, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Midlothian, Short Pump).

Only tablets and patches will be accepted – no liquids, needles or sharp objects.

Other local drug take-back events

Hampton

You can get rid of your unwanted prescription drugs on October 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the parking lot of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office Carmel Center at 136 Kings Way. The drive-through event is part of the DEA’s national effort to prevent pill abuse.

Gloucester

The Gloucester Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) will be at the Gloucester Walmart on October 23, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect over-the-counter and / or prescription (expired / unwanted) medications from the community. A deputy will collect the drugs from the public and store them in provided containers, which will then be handed over to the DEA regional office for destruction. This is an annual event where GCSO partners with the DEA’s Drug Take Back Initiative to help prevent inappropriate drug disposal in the home.
